Treating Burned Victims: Tilapia Skin or Gauze and Cream?

Recently there has been a new, and very impressive, health trend popping up in Brazil. Doctors in Fortaleza, Brazil, are turning away from treating burned patients with gauze and cream and are turning to treating them with sterilized tilapia fish skin. This treatment with tilapia skin has mainly been directed towards patients suffering from second and third degree burns, and has been very successful so far. Before this introduction of sterilized tilapia skin as a treatment for burned patients, doctors in Brazil relied on using gauze and silver sulfadizine cream. This silver sulfadizine cream was used specifically because it contained silver, which helped prevent infection and any other complications that could arise for a patient. Although this method was the traditional way of treating burns and was used for a long period of time, it is unclear as to how successful it was. It was unknown if the silver sulfadizine cream really helped heal a burn faster, and the gauze and cream dres...

What College Major Is Right For You?

When attending college, it can be easy or difficult to choose a major that suits you. Some people know straight off the bat what major they want to pursue and the future career they desire, while others come in undeclared and have to test out classes from different disciplines to figure out what they are interested in. Despite this variance in decision making along with the vast diversity of majors offered at colleges today, students decide what major they want to pursue in different ways. Here is my story of how I chose my major and minor. When I first got accepted into the college I am attending, I was accepted as a Business Management Economics major. However, I knew this was not a major I would be willing to pursue for all four years of my undergraduate career, so I switched to Human Biology. However, after looking at the curriculum for this major (which is an intense, heavily loaded course of science courses), I scared myself out of pursuing this major, and settled on Anthropolo...

Naturebox

If you want to snack better, eat better, and live a healthier lifestyle, try out Naturebox. Naturebox is a snack subscription box, where you pay five dollars a month to be a member, and get to order as many snacks as you would like from their website, which will then be sent right to your doorstep. I first subscribed to Naturebox about a month ago, and have already ordered and received two snack shipments, and while I am still learning about everything Naturebox has to offer, I am already loving this subscription. The benefits of being a member of Naturebox includes all the sales you get on the snacks. You pay a significantly cheaper price as a member (you get up to forty percent off all of their snacks), which means you get to order more snacks than if you were a non-member! Naturebox also features over 100 snacks made with simple ingredients and no artificial ingredients, and they add new snacks every month so there is always something new to try! The first month of your Naturebo...

Super Bowl Food Consumption

Today is the big game day; the Super Bowl is today! Because everyone has their game day parties, houses are filled to the brim with different types of snacks that will all be consumed while the game is being watched. However, what so many people are unaware of, is how many calories they are consuming on Super Bowl day. I wanted to comment on this in today's post. So many individuals run to the grocery store to buy the essentials for game day: chips, salsa, guacamole, wings, beer, and soda. Besides this, most individuals have a lot of other dishes planned out, which makes game day potentially the number one most caloric day of the year (there are debates between whether the Super Bowl or Thanksgiving day is the most caloric day of the year). According to many grocery stores, so many individuals consume an unhealthy amount of food during the Super Bowl, and unhealthy types of foods. On game day, people are unlikely to sit in front of the TV munching on vegetables with ranch dippi...

Taking Care Of Your Body And Health

In America, heart disease is the number one killer of individuals. What is interesting however, is that according to the American Heart Association, more women than men have died from heart disease. 43 million women in the United States develop heart disease each year, which is a heartbreaking number to look at. Luckily, more and more individuals are becoming aware of how serious heart disease truly is, and are taking steps to reduce their risk of developing the disease. The American Heart Association states that 80 percent of heart attacks and strokes can be prevented if individuals made changes in their lifestyles. One of these changes that can be made is exercise. By ensuring that you partake in at least 30 minutes of exercise at least 5 days a week or 10 to 15 minutes if 30 minutes is not an option, you will become so much healthier. You can engage in many activities to gain exercise: you can walk, bike, dance, run, use different equipment at the gym, etc. There are so many activ...

Making A Change In My Lifestyle Part 2

I recently wrote a post in November 2016 called "Making A Change In My Lifestyle," where I focused solely on talking about how I have been pretty drastic changes in my diet in order to try and alleviate the severity of my acne. This post today, is a part 2 version of that, an update on how I have been doing a couple months after making this dietary change. I am pretty strict on myself, always pushing myself to follow the diet I outlined for myself. Before I go eat anything at the dining hall at my college, I always check the online menu and see which foods that I want to eat has dairy in it. Since I am trying to cut out all forms of dairy, I avoid all foods that contain dairy at the dining hall. I am also completely avoiding processed and sugary foods, so no cupcakes, no cake, no muffins, no graham cracker, no cheez-its, etc. I have been so good about avoiding these processed and sugary foods, and I find that I feel so much better when I don't consume them. I rarely get...

The Exercise Dilemma

When anyone first starts working out, it is definitely hard to motivate yourself to do it. If you are planning on working out in the evening, you often get distracted by something else (TV, friends, food, etc.), basically anything that will convince yourself that you don't have time to exercise that night. And if you want to work out in the morning, you debate between leaving your warm, cozy bed to put on exercise clothes and exercise. However, once you start working out consistently and get into a routine, it becomes easier and easier to push yourself to work out. Here are some tips to help you get into a consistent exercise routine. First of all, you want to make sure that you eat properly before exercising. If you consume heavy, greasy foods, or a lot of food all at once and then exercise, you are definitely going to feel sluggish. And if you consume a lot of these same foods before going to sleep and then wake up early in the morning to work out, your body won't have had ...
