I wrote a satire a few months ago for my AP English Literature class, and I just wanted to post it in case anyone wanted to take the time to read it. It was a lot of fun to create, and writing this satire allowed my creativity to shine and express my opinions on dress code. I don't write satires that often, so I thought I would post this since writing these things occurs so rarely for me. Hope you enjoy and get a laugh out of it!
Satire on the topic of dress code:
At the start of the 2014 school year, the school administrators at No Joy High School stated at the first assembly that they decided to create a stricter dress code so students would come to school dressed “more appropriately.” Because this caused unrest, Principal Smith calmed the students by claiming this change would raise the school’s reputation as a “school that spreads good vibes.” He then concluded with his new motto of the year, “Hashtag swag.”
In an interview, Principal Smith confirmed the change, nodding his head quickly while murmuring the words “yes…dress code…short shorts…crop tops…” After questioned about why he emphasized the words “short shorts” and “crop tops” which only appeal to the female students, Principal Smith gave a very thorough answer, saying “The short shorts, crop tops, and low cut tops are distracting for everyone, as the girls are showing too much skin. The low cut tops and short shorts do not cover their…they don’t cover…they…what were we talking about? I forgot.”
Despite the administrators’ want for these new rules, many students are becoming frustrated. One student in particular faced the negative effects of following the new dress code. “I was shoved onto the ground in the hall today by my friend when I was walking from third to fourth period,” stated the student. “After realizing I had fallen down my friend helped me up, claiming she did not recognize me because she wasn’t used to seeing me wear jeans and a plaid shirt instead of short shorts and a crop top. She said what I was wearing made me look super shady.”
Despite the controversy these new rules have introduced, it is clear they are beneficial. The administrators have reported seeing less of what they call “sexy and inappropriate outfits,” and more of the “jeans and sweatshirts.” These new rules are clearly working for the student body, and with the students’ actions of fist pumping and yelling “YES DRESS CODE,” upon hearing the new rules at the first assembly of the school year, it is clear these rules will be enforced for years to come.
